WPEG, The All New Power 98fm is a mainstream urban radio station serving Charlotte, North Carolina. Owned by Beasley Broadcast Group, the station has a rich history dating back to its launch as WEGO-FM in Concord, North Carolina in 1961. Throughout its evolution, WPEG has broadcasted a diverse range of formats including country music, beautiful music, gold-based adult contemporary, disco, and ultimately, a leading urban contemporary station with a strong focus on hip-hop. Notably, the station gained notoriety in 1978 when local DJ Mitchell Eaves launched the "shoot-the-moon" contest, resulting in significant traffic disruptions and widespread media attention. Today, WPEG remains Charlotte’s heritage urban radio station, providing a platform for popular hip-hop and R&B music.
